Discovering the mythical cities of Palermo and Taormina and their ancient remains is a must, as is taking the time to breathe in the sea air, scented by the nearby fig trees. During this week of travel in Sicily, immerse yourself in this culture founded by so many different civilizations, made unique, and let yourself be seduced by the beautiful Sicily and its history…
Have a nice trip to Sicily! Fly from France to Palermo, where you’ll pick up your car and drive to your centrally-located hotel in a former palace.
Nestled between sea and mountains, bustling and frenetic, deeply Sicilian and mixed, Palermo is one of Italy’s most fascinating cities. It boasts a gigantic historic center, criss-crossed by narrow, dark streets that lead to both sumptuous palaces and ruined monuments. From the Norman Palace to the famous Mondello beach, dozens of monuments await you. This is partly due to the fusion of Western, Byzantine and Islamic cultures, which at one point in history had the upper hand here, one after the other. Don’t wait another second to enter the Norman Palace and discover its Palatine Chapel, entirely covered in gold mosaics. Then visit the famous cathedral, a splendid example of the fusion of arts and cultures. And when evening falls, don’t miss a trip to one of the city’s markets, teeming with life and beautiful produce!
Second day of travel to Palermo. Take a tour of less-frequented neighborhoods that are just as rich in discoveries, such as the still-popular port district, where dilapidated buildings stand alongside Baroque churches and majestic palaces. Backing onto the port, the lovely piazza Marina, with its garden shaded by gigantic ficus trees, invites you to pause and admire the superb palazzos that line it, while sitting at a terrace. Take time to enjoy your accommodation, where attention to detail and a love of interior design merge to create a warm ambience and make you feel right at home.
This morning, drive east to the town of Milazzo where you will take the ferry to continue your journey to Sicily in the Aeolian Islands. You’ll be staying on the island of Salina in a small haven of peace, offering you the delicacies of a Michelin-starred restaurant and the setting of an infinity pool overlooking the sea. Here, where nature and the sea mingle with Sicily’s oldest traditions, you’ll experience absolute relaxation.
The Aeolian Islands truly exude a special, even captivating, atmosphere. Dolce Vita, unshakable traditions. But also, spirits of character, exuberant nature, influences from across the Mediterranean, turquoise waters. Then, perched villages, generous dishes, cicadas in the shade of thousand-year-old buildings… Discover all of this today. Travel to the island of Lipari, the main island of the Aeolian Islands archipelago. Walk along its seafront, reach its castle, tour its archaeological museum, its churches and quiet streets. Then, head to the island of Vulcano, its neighbor. Today, the splendid beaches, the sea water of exceptional purity, the sun and the wildly beautiful landscapes make it a privileged place. Nevertheless, the acrid smell of sulfur is the solemn guest of visitors to Vulcano. If you wish, discover the impressive crater of its volcano and its water vapor geysers. A change of scenery and lunar atmosphere guaranteed in the Aeolian Islands.
For the 5th day of this week’s trip to Sicily, leave the Aeolian Islands and return to the mainland to go to Taormina. Its location on the slopes of Mount Tauro facing the Mediterranean offers some of the finest views on the island. A visit to Taormina in Sicily is the best way to immerse yourself in the island’s fascinating history and the special atmosphere that has inspired so many artists over the centuries. Drop off your luggage at a hotel in an exceptional setting overlooking the Ionian Sea, with a view of Mount Etna. The lush gardens are the perfect place to read a book and relax, and the rooftop restaurant serves local specialties made with fresh, seasonal produce, just like at breakfast.
Visit the town’s impressive Gallo-Roman theater, surprisingly well preserved. You can also take the Taormina cable car for breathtaking views of the cliffs and theater, attend the Taormina Art Festival and visit the villas and the Duomo cathedral-fortress, a major point of interest in the town.
