A unique chance to go for a privileged stay in one of the greatest historical and cultural regions of Italy, Veneto. Traveling with specially adapted traditional boats, we experience the best gastronomy of Venice and a historical overview of the region, reflecting its very historical and cultural essence.
Before your gastronomic cruise, Venice : the lagoon at the origin of the city. A little taste of the hidden secret of one of the world’s most famous cities.
On arrival at the airport, guests will be transferred directly to “Venissa”, a Michelin star recently named by the New York Times as one of the places “to stay” on the island of Mazzorbo where you can relax and visit the island of Burano, renowned for the art of lacemaking, before dinner and overnight.
This morning, we board the boat, a uniquely and exquisitely restored bragozzo – an antique boat from Chioggia whose design dates back to the time of the Doges restored to sail in the Venetian lagoon. Our gastronomic cruise will then take us north of the lagoon to reach Torcello Island to visit the immense Byzantine cathedral.
Lunch will be served on board on the calm canals of the salt marsh, then we’ll head north of the lagoon where nature is still unspoiled. At this time of year we’ll see hundreds of Phoenicoptera flying over the salt marsh, joining many other types of wild ducks, the flower of a typical lagoon grass, colored light purple, the “barene”.
We will reach the “Custom House Inn” at sunset for our fine dining dinner about gastronomy in Venice and spend the night.
This morning, after the local fishermen have deposited the night’s catch, we head for Venice.
While sailing, we’ll prepare lunch to create a meal from what the lagoon has to offer. Venice begins to appear in the distance, showing us the way to our journey.
On the way to the island of Lazzareto Nuovo, we drop anchor and have lunch. A visit to the island allows us to understand the origins of some of Venice’s most distinctive masks. Masks were first manufactured for medical reasons, to protect the face and nose covered with vinegar-soaked sheets to help prevent plague infections. The island was used to decontaminate goods and sailors during a mandatory quarantine period to prevent the spread of this dreaded disease. We’ll also find evidence on this island of inhabitants much earlier than the Roman age!
At this point, the rooftops of Venice will appear to us, as they did in the past, when arrival in the city was by boat and the magnificence of the Palazzo Ducale signalled the end of a journey. Our jstay in Venice and our gastronomic cruise is now over.
