Travel guide
India

Spicy colors and flavors

India is an intense country, which is why travelers often have a passionate relationship with it. It’s all there in striking abundance: its economic power, the sheer number of inhabitants, their religions, the noise in the streets, the omnipresent poverty on the border with overflowing wealth, the unusual colors, the vivid spices, the grandeur of the breathtakingly beautiful temples and many other hidden treasures that you’ll discover along your journey to Gandhi’s country. Some come to find inner peace through meditation. In the North, enjoy the unmissable beauty of the Taj Mahal, explore the Thar Desert and discover the beauty of rituals in the Ganges at the end of the world’s greatest religious festival. To the south, witness scenes from the film Slumdog Millionnaire in Mumbai and explore Hindu temples.

It’s a country that leaves no one indifferent and can sometimes even be disturbing, but its singularity makes it a unique journey.

Key figures

Indian time is 05:30 ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. So, as the country doesn’t change time, when it’s 12pm in France, it’s 4:30pm in India in winter (+4:30pm) and 3:30pm in summer (+3:30pm). Whether you’re in Mumbai or Kolkata, it’s the same time, so there’s a bit of a light difference within the country!

Santé

To be updated:

  • DT Polio
  • whooping cough
  • hepatitis A and B
  • measles
  • possibly rabies

Pollution of land, sea and especially air has become India’s major ecological problem. Atmospheric pollution peaks, not only in major cities, can cause respiratory problems for sensitive travelers, who should therefore be cautious and even use protective masks. By following as closely as possible the advice you’ve been given to protect yourself from dietary, environmental and behavioral risks, you’ll reduce the likelihood of encountering them. Food-borne infections are very common in India, and few travelers escape them. So take extra care when choosing your drinks and meals. The risk of malaria is real below 1500 m in the states of “deep” India (rural areas of Orissa, West Bengal or Andra Pradesh). For these regions, a preventive treatment should be prescribed by your doctor.
