SEE THE 2019 CARNIVALS OF PERU

Peruvian carnivals are marked by the festive character in the Andean areas, which break their solemn traditions. Beyond regional variations, a common feature in most of the mountain is the ritual of yunza. It involves artificially planting a tree trunk laden with gifts, the guests dance around until it is chopped with a machete or an ax. The couple who gave the final blow and brings down the tree will then be the responsibility of organizing the yunza the following year. Peruvians are extremely fond of throwing buckets of water during this festival, so audiences would be wise to take precautions. Cities where carnivals reached a peak are Cajamarca and Puno.
