This trip features a combination of complementary Canary Islands, from Tenerife to Fuerteventura. During your stay, you’ll be accommodated in charming, human-scale establishments that offer an authentic experience. You’ll discover the riches of Tenerife, the archipelago’s largest and most diverse island, before heading off to Fuerteventura, renowned for its magnificent beaches and golden sand dunes. Two islands with different atmospheres, for a journey full of contrasts and discoveries.
On arrival at the airport, pick up your rental car and drive to Garachico. Settle into a manor house that was once home to Tenerife’s first family; nestle in a banana plantation that borders a rugged coastline.
The de Ponte family has a strong presence in Garachico; they’ve been here since 1507. They built their own church in 1565, then ruled the island from 1608. It’s their land by the sea and the dragon tree that stands in the courtyard is 400 years old.
Today, they manage a banana plantation. They’re all around you, with beacon trails to guide you. You plunge down the main road, past the little church, then head for the ocean. Hotel Rural el Patio is a curious blend of styles. Hundred-year-old palm trees soar in an ancient courtyard, and a sparkling swimming pool lazes with sublime mountain views. Inside, the 26 rooms are simple but impeccable. Don’t expect chic design, but rather cast-iron beds, flowery bedspreads, colorful walls and terracotta floors. The rooms are divided between the manor house, the cellar and the stables. Others are 800 meters away in a pretty annex. Don’t miss the old garden, lemon trees, hanging ferns, purple bougainvillea, tennis court and croquet lawn. A total escape, very popular for resting.
What to see / What to do: Hiking in Teide National Park. Teide National Park is dominated by the 3,781-metre-high volcano. Although it last erupted in 1798, it is still a geological treasure trove. Lava flows form lunar landscapes, and are home to exceptional flora in spring. The park is also home to many animals, including several species of reptiles and birds. Explore Teide in the company of a private English-speaking guide, outside peak times.
What to see / What to do: Take a stroll through the cobbled streets of Garachico; visit La Orotava for its rich architectural heritage; take a trip to San Cristobal de La Laguna, a town with a South American atmosphere; relax on the beaches, which alternate between white and black sand; sit on a terrace in the evening and enjoy the day’s catch; taste the island’s wines… Visit to a banana plantation; Visit to the village of Garachico.
Drive to the airport and flight to Fuerteventura (10:00am – 10:50am). On arrival, a new car will take you to your hotel. Settle in for 4 nights in a place of character. Katis Style Villas is a resort in a prime location just minutes from the beach and dunes of Corralejo Natural Park. Designed and decorated in three different styles – classical, Greek and Balinese – the Katis Style Villas offer luxurious accommodation in a pleasant, friendly atmosphere.
Perfect for exploring this magnificent island, the hotel is within easy reach of all of Fuerteventura’s spectacular white-sand beaches, as well as the island’s most important sites and attractions, including the sacred mountain of Tindaya, the Casa de los Coroneles and the spectacular sunsets at Cotillo. The island’s capital, Puerto del Rosario, is 32 km away, and the airport is a 40-minute drive from the complex.
Guests can take advantage of the swimming pool and Internet service. Villas feature en-suite double bedrooms and kitchens. They also have a range of modern equipment.
Visits and activities: Hiking in Corralejo Park. Some call it “Corralejo Dunes Park”, others simply “Corralejo Nature Park”. In both cases, it’s one of the most beautiful natural sites on the island of Fuerteventura, and in the Canaries as a whole. Located in the north of the island, this natural park features long white sand dunes and crystal-clear ocean waters. The panorama is exceptional and the impression of solitude that emanates from this desert territory is conducive to calm and escape.
Sotavento beach: This is the longest beach on Fuerteventura, and one of the most beautiful stretches of fine sand in the Canary Islands. For over 10 kilometers, Sotavento beach offers sunny territory ideal for strolling, lounging on a towel and/or water sports. This is the beach where kitesurfers and windsurfers usually gather. Sotavento beach is not very popular with tourists compared with its reputation. So you can enjoy its dunes and landscapes in complete freedom, without too much promiscuity? with locals or other travellers.
Cofete beach: Located in the north of the Jandia peninsula, Cofete beach is undoubtedly the wildest beach on the island of Fuerteventura. The 12-kilometre-long stretch of golden sand bears few traces of human presence (roads, dwellings, etc.). Cofete beach is so wild that it’s difficult to get there without a minimum of local knowledge. The path to the beach, made of earth and stones, has some very technical sections, even for the most experienced 4 x 4 drivers.
What to see / What to do: Designed by the artist Cesar Manrique, the Morro Velosa viewpoint propels you into a landscape of rare beauty. Far from the postcards that usually highlight the island of Fuerteventura, the Morro Velosa viewpoint offers an arid landscape, a wild area with no dunes or tourists on the horizon, all in shades of ochre.
Jandia Nature Park: Located in the south-western part of the island of Fuerteventura, Jandia Nature Park is a protected area covering almost the entire Jandia peninsula. It features a mountainous area and kilometers of white sandy beaches. The park is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, most of them endemic and some of them endangered. If you’re lucky, you’ll come across a few squirrels that aren’t too keen on approaching tourists.
