A totally unplugged journey through the archipelagos of French Polynesia: Leeward Islands, Marquesas, Tuamotu. You’ll pass from mountains to lagoons, from white sandy beaches to splendid views. Welcome to France’s most beautiful islands.
This stay is not in the biggest luxury hotels, but in local guesthouses, where the warm welcome is worth much more than a few stars.
Arrive and check into a simple motel close to the airport. Overnight in a local guesthouse.
Morning flight to Nuku Hiva. The Marquesas archipelago sets its basalt peaks against the indigo of the Pacific. The pristine beauty of these South Sea islands is legendary, and has attracted writers, artists and adventurers since the time of Captain Cook.
Wild lands, powerful landscapes, tormented reliefs, deep valleys, but also the gentleness of a people, the secrets of archaeological sites and handicrafts, are all seductive assets. Set up for 3 nights, perched on a hillside, your second “pension” overlooks the picturesque village of Taiohae. Conveniently located near the port, market and other facilities, the guesthouse will make your stay a pleasant one as you discover the island of Nuku Hiva.
Take advantage of your free time to visit the village and its magnificent church. The village is easily reached on foot or by local bus. Visit the large craft market, then set off on a 4×4 tour of the island (optional, please consult us).
What to see / What to do: Muake Pass, picnic with superb views of Taiohae Bay, descent into the Taipivai valley, climb on foot to the Me’ae Paeke archaeological site (approx. 30 min walk along a narrow path).
In the middle of the day, head for the airport and fly to Hiva Oa. Arrive and settle in for 3 nights high above the village of Atuona, in a simple, welcoming guesthouse offering 4 bungalows amid bougainvillea blossoms, with a breathtaking view of the bay, harbor and ocean. A dining room welcomes you for breakfast, while other meals are usually taken outside, in the village’s snack bars and restaurants. For dinners, a tasty selection of island specialities is available on request. Tania, your charming hostess, will welcome you in the purest Marquesan tradition and involve you in the life of the island.
What to see / do (not included): Hike (30 min.) or 4×4 to visit the Mea’e Te l’Ipona (ancient temple) with the largest Tiki (Taka’i’i) in the Marquesas, then visit the tomb of the last Puamau tribal chief. 11am Return on board and departure for Hanaiapa. 20-minute hike to reach the village, famous for its lush gardens. Visit the 2 museums dedicated to Brel and Gauguin. Lunch at Hoa Nui restaurant.
In the afternoon, return to the airport for your flight to Papeete.
Arrive and settle in for 1 night on the island’s sunniest west coast, just a short walk from the marina, lagoonarium and Taapuna surf spot. Ideally located near a shopping center, a car rental office, the Tahiti & her Islands Museum and, above all, opposite access to the island’s longest white-sand beach. Rooms and studios are spacious, comfortable and decorated in Polynesian colors. You’ll have the choice of eating at the table d’hôtes by the pool, cooking in your studio or sampling one of the many “roulottes” – small, typically Polynesian travelling restaurants located around the guesthouse.
After a 30-minute ferry crossing, you arrive in Moorea and settle in for 3 nights in a small hotel, ideal for nature lovers, far from the big resorts, but with all the comforts and much more… You’ll love its location right on the beach.
Rated 3* in the “fare d’hôtes” pension category, the “fare” are built in the Polynesian tradition, harmoniously integrated into a magnificent natural environment, composed of various varieties of trees, plants, flowers and tropical scents.
What to see / What to do Enjoy a Mahi-Mahi on the beach, take part in traditional dance performances, move nonchalantly from a towel on the sand to a sun lounger by the infinity pool, put on fins, mask and snorkel to greet the multicolored fish, take a trip on a catamaran, kayak or water scooter, enjoy a flower treatment at the spa, take a bike ride around the island or, for the more adventurous, try parasailing over the lagoon. A unique diving and snorkeling experience with a spinner dolphin, with a French-speaking guide.
Fly to Bora Bora and spend 2 nights on the “most beautiful island in the world”.
A 3* hotel opens its doors and welcomes you in a bubble in the heart of one of its 13 houses on stilts. Here, turquoise-blue lagoons, exotic flowers and verdant peaks will enliven your stay. On a human scale, your hotel offers top-of-the-range service and a decor that combines modernism and tradition. Diving enthusiasts will be delighted to be able to indulge in this activity just a few meters away, right on the shore.
Another flight to the Tuamotu archipelago, to Tahiti’s largest atoll and islands. Once you’ve left your haven of softness and dreams, more surprises await you on the island of Rengiroa. Here, pearl farming is a way of life, as is diving. Here you’ll be welcomed in a guesthouse for 3 nights, located in the peaceful village of Avatoru.
What to see/Do: Dolphin watching on Ohotu Point. Cycle around the main motu, stopping for a swim in the Hoa. Visit the villages of Tiputa and Avatoru.
Take off for Maupiti, a confidential island, often described as a Bora-Bora of the 70s, which has escaped major infrastructure until now and still has one of Polynesia’s most beautiful lagoons. Settle in for 3 nights, half-board, in a traditional guesthouse set on a motu (islet) and a magnificent private white sand beach. A heavenly refuge that lives up to its name.
If the beach and the magnificent lagoon are enough to enjoy Maupiti, the island offers many activities that can be organized directly with your guesthouse.
What to see / What to do: Rent a back-pedaling bike and set off on a romantic tour of the island. Improvise swimming along the water’s edge, meet the locals and, for the more courageous, climb Mount Teurafaatiu, which requires a good level of physical fitness and offers superb views. Last but not least: snorkelling with manta rays frolicking in the lagoon.
During the day, head to the airport to catch your flight to Papeete. Once you’ve settled into your guesthouse, relax here for a while longer.
To experience: A dinner in the roulottes on Papeete harbor, local atmosphere guaranteed.
