In a small valley in the Peloponnesus, the shrine of Asclepius, the god of medicine, from the cult of Apollo (maleate), took the form not later than the sixth century BC and became the official religion of the city-state Epidaurus. Its principal monuments, including the temple of Asklepios, the Tholos and the Theatre - considered one of the purest masterpieces of Greek architecture - date from the fourth century. The vast site, with its temples and hospital buildings devoted to its gods, is an outstanding example of the healing cults of Greece and Rome.
