Some 500 people dressed in splendid costumes and makeup old traditional way march through the main streets of Kyoto. Aoi Matsuri festival called this because the leaves of aoi (hollyhock) are used not only as decorative motifs on the costumes, ornaments but also as cows and horses. The festival seeks to replicate the procession of officials bringing messages to the emperor and paying tribute to two sanctuaries Shimogamo and Kamigamo. This is why the most important place of this parade is held by the messenger on horseback with a sword in his belt and gold followed by many servants. But the highlight of the procession is a parade of women accompanying the agent of the imperial princess in charge of serving the gods. This character is carefully selected from all single women living in Kyoto. The elected official must wear the costume of the imperial court, that is to say 12 bunk kimonos, representing a weight of 30 kg.
