Hana Matsuri or Flower Festival, is a memorial service taking place in all the temples in Japan to celebrate the birth of the historical Buddha on April 8. This event is also called Kanbutsu. That day, small buildings decorated with flowers are made in the temples and a tanjobutsu (child statuette of Buddha) is placed inside. This figure is sprayed ama-cha, a beverage of tea leaves in hot water, by the faithful with a ladle. Some people bring the ama-cha home to drink the holy water.
