Dunvegan Castle is located a mile and a half north of Dunvegan and about 22 miles west of Portree on the Isle of Skye. It is the seat of the clan MacLeod. Dunvegan Castle is reported to be the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and was the stronghold of the clan leaders for nearly 800 years. Originally designed to prevent people going home, Dunvegan Castle has been open to the public in 1933. Since then, the castle is consistently ranked as one of the leading attractions in Scotland. Over the years, the castle was visited by Sir Walter Scott, Dr Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II and the Emperor of Japan Akihito.
