The Medina Azahara was built at the request of the caliph Abd al-Rahman III, with money bequeathed by his favorite Al-Zahra. It was designed to become the capital of a new province of the Caliphate of Cordoba. Great patron, Caliph Abd al-Rahman III establishes a clever policy making his most prosperous areas of the West, the only comparable period in Baghdad and Byzantium. The Medina Al-Zahara was built on terraces staggered matching the slope of the mountain. The remains of foundations, paint and composite columns and Corinthian style are still visible. The visit of two rooms, recently restored, is a must. The site was declared a National Monument in 1923.
