Revealed in 1908, the stands of the Roman theater are backed by the steep slopes of the hill whose top Pipet formed in ancient times, which was a religious esplanade with its temples and sacred statues divine extension of the theater. Capacity of approximately 13,000 spectators was the Roman Theatre of Vienna one of the largest urban theaters of the Roman Empire, the second after that of Gaul Autun. It was not until 1937 that the public may attend back to entertainment. In 1980, a night of blues adds to an already busy program. Originally scheduled at the Roman theater, it must fall back hastily under a tent hastily built on the Champ de Mars on the evening of the first, due to storm. This is the first well-watered for what would become the international jazz festival night: Jazz in Vienna. Since then, the Roman theater in Vienna serves as a backdrop to the festival.
