The town of San Gimignano delle Belle Torri located in Tuscany was an important relay point for pilgrims on their way to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses (up to 50 m high), symbols of their wealth and power. There are only 14 of these, San Gimignano has retained its feudal atmosphere and appearance. The city also contains masterpieces of Italian art of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
