The Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, and the entire territory of the island is legally part of the Union (application of the acquis communautaire is considered “suspended” in the north, given the de facto situation there). Any national of a Member State can therefore move freely throughout the island and cross the buffer zone simply by presenting a valid identity document at the crossing points. There are seven crossing points through the buffer zone: two in the west (Limnitis/Yesilirmak; Astromeritis/Zodeia); three in Nicosia (Ayios Dometios/Metehan; Ledra Palace and Ledra/Lokmaci), the last two being reserved for pedestrians and cyclists; two in the east (Pergamos/Pyla and Ayios Nicolaos/Strovilia).
