On the edge of the world.
Antarctica is the promise of an exceptional journey, the discovery of a wild world, a true spectacle of life. Today, the “White Continent” exerts a real fascination.
It wasn’t until 1820 that it was tackled. This icy immensity boasts spectacular mountain scenery, some of the largest icebergs in the world, and millions of animals living in vast colonies: fur seals, penguin colonies, albatrosses, elephant seals, killer whales and whales in great numbers, all living side by side in a grandiose landscape.
Some words and expressions in the language
You’ll be able to use English if you ever set foot on these shores.
“In a world obsessed with the passage of time, Antarctica does not submit to the tyranny of clocks and adopts a rather casual attitude to the subject. As Antarctica lies at the confluence of all the world’s time zones, in theory its time would be that of each of them. In reality, the continent remains detached from rational time constraints and uses a method which, while unusual, is nonetheless highly effective: a method consisting of choosing its operational time zone.” – extract Hurtigruten
