Surrounded by Glenisla's stunning scenery, Forter Castle was originally built in 1560 built by the Ogilvys of Airlie as a fortified house or ‘Fortalice’ in 1560. The principal reason for construction was to fortify and protect the entrance to the Balloch pass to Glenshee and the important Moneca
Pass to Braemar and the North. The Castle enjoys a history as rich as the countryside in which it sits. Destroyed by the Duke of Argyll in 1640, it has been completely restored using traditional materials. Designer Katharine Pooley has transformed the interior into one of luxury and comfort. Forter boasts all modern amenities and occupies five floors, each reached by a stone spiral staircase. Forter Castle, At the start of 2003 Katharine Pooley, Roberts daughter
and her team took on the challenge of re-designing the interior of the castle. A huge amount of imagination, time and details has been spent on transforming Forter.
