In October 1810, the Crown Prince Louis, later King Ludwig I, was celebrating his wedding to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The festivities, which the citizens of Munich were invited, took place on the meadow which is named "Theresienwiese", Pré de Teresa in honor of the bride. The festivities were completed by a horse race which was celebrated as a regional festival. It was decided to renew the race every year, so was born the tradition of "Christmas" in October. Today Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in the world.
