In the eastern part of the Yucatan peninsula, between archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Coba, Tulum and Ek Balam, between cenotes and caves beautiful, there are communities that preserve their traditions, customs, language, dance, music, and the ancestral ceremonies. They are considered the heart of the Maya area of Yucatan and Quintana Roo. X'ocen sanctuary with its pre-Hispanic, is one of those communities that displays its deep cultural roots. Each year, the play "Momentos Sagrados Maya" (Mayan Sacred Moments) is presented in X'ocen, near Valladolid, written and directed by Maria Alicia Martinez Medrano, to an individual open-air stage. The cast includes 300 players of all ages, the inhabitants of X'ocen, Dzitnup, Nohzuytún, San Silverio, Tikuch, and Xuilub Yalchén. They taught theater and dance by the Laboratorio de Teatro Campesino e Indígena, which, through theater, seeks to contribute to the preservation of indigenous arts in the full development of children and youth, and improve quality of life of marginalized populations in our country.
