October marks the beginning of the season for dredging oysters in the seaside town of Falmouth in Cornwall. Some regulations require that the 19th century engines are prohibited in the waters around (not to disturb shellfish), so the fishermen traverse winding creeks of the estuary in traditional sailing ships, taking their hand dredges. Back on shore, the Falmouth Oyster Festival takes place with markets, cooking demonstrations of local products and even an oyster shucking contest.
