Experience in Aman-i-Khas is focused on wildlife. Twice daily, guided tours in a convertible vehicle safaris take you to the heart of the Ranthambore National Park. The park was once the hunting ground of the Maharajah of Jaipur, but was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955. Following concerted conservation efforts and the launch of Project Tiger in 1973, the tiger population is now more visible and stable. The heart of the park, which measures about 400 square miles, offers the best chance to see tigers, leopards, jungle cats, hyenas and sloth bear. The observation is not guaranteed, but the region is considered among the best in India to see the tiger. Chital deer, antelopes and gazelles can be seen in the savanna, while lakes and ponds are home to the Indian marsh crocodile. The life of birds, resident and migratory, is prolific and more than 350 species have been sighted in the park. Camel safaris in the periphery of the park and traditional villages are also available.
