The mountain railways of India consist of three rail links. The first and most outstanding is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Its construction required bold and ingenious solutions to solve problems related to the mountainous geography. The second link is the Nilgiri, a single track line from meter gauge and 46 km long in the State of Tamil Nadu, whose construction was delayed because of difficulties presented by the mountainous site. This line from an altitude of 326 m to 2203 m, representing the latest technology for its time. Finally, the Railway Kalka to Shimla is a single track line 96 km long, built in the mid-19th century to serve the city of Shimla. The three railways are still fully operational and will show technical prowess and material in place to open up the mountain populations through the railway.
