Known to be the most representative dance of the Andes, its origins pre-Columbian mixed early with Western influences, the Huayno spread to dozens of regional variations. The dance is performed by couples who make turns and movements featuring hops and a zapateo as to mark the time. The instruments used to accompany huayno include quena, the charango, harp and violin. Some variants of the huayno involve bands that have added trumpets, saxophones and accordions.
