Tétouan was of particular importance in the Islamic period, from the eighth century, as the primary point of contact between Morocco and Andalusia. After the Reconquest, the town was rebuilt by refugees returned to the region after being expelled by the Spanish. The architecture and art reflect strong Andalusian influences.
